Success for Wrexham high fliers
by MArtin Williams - 07/09/2010
"THE careers of two high fliers at a North Wales firm of chartered accountants are taking off."
Terry Whitney, 32, and Rhian Williams, 25, have been appointed Senior Practitioners after gaining NVQ level three qualifications in leadership and management.
News of their success has delighted the directors at Coxeys, which has offices in Wrexham and Saltney.
Rather than go to university, Rhian decided on-the-job learning was a better route for her to achieve her ambition of becoming a chartered accountant.
Earlier this year, she and her Coxeys colleague Adele Roberts were held up as role models as part of a national campaign to promote training within the profession.
They were both featured in a national magazine produced by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT).
Rhian said: “I came to Coxeys as a trainee in 2004 after doing an A level in accountancy.
“For me, on the job learning was definitely better than going down the university route because you gain experience whilst you’re learning.
“The reason I chose to do the management NVQ was that I was covering a member of staff who was on maternity leave so I was stepping into her role as manager of the Business Solutions team.
“I wanted something tangible to go along with my change in my role and the management course was perfect really.”
Terry also felt the course was a great opportunity for him to develop new skills.
He said: “Although my main role is working as an accountant, there was a need for me to actually enhance my leadership skills.”
The training was delivered by the Pendine Park Teaching Care Centre in Wrexham.
