Sainsbury’s confirms new store for St Mary Street

by Jonathan Evans - 26/11/2009

Sainsbury’s confirms new store for St Mary Street

"ST MARY Street is fast becoming Cardiff’s supermarket alley after Sainsbury’s confirmed it would open a new store next spring."

Plans are already in place for a Tesco Express to open in the city centre street this month, and now another of the so-called “big five” supermarkets has confirmed it is coming to the city centre.

And with Spar and McColl’s newsagents already in business, the street is becoming a hotbed for convenience stores.

Sainsbury’s will open at the old HSBC building on Guildhall Place, with 25 new jobs being created at the store.

The street seems to have altered considerably in recent years from its previous image as an upmarket shopping destination.

And the plans to bring two supermarkets to St Mary Street have been met with mixed reactions by some market traders, who fear it will kill their business.

But news of Sainsbury’s arrival was welcomed by Cardiff’s shopping bosses.

City centre manager Paul Williams said: “I think this has to be a good thing.

“We’ve got big development plans for St Mary Street in terms of pedestrianisation and things like that, and this can only help.

“We want the street to be a key site for retailers and this underlines that.

“I think it’s a positive move and is good for the city centre as a whole.

“It gives a good food option in an area where there are now lots of residents.

“I think we need to ensure that people do have choice and this helps that.”

David Hughes-Lewis, chairman of Cardiff Retail Partnership, added: “It’s tremendous news and confirms the confidence that St Mary Street holds.

“An empty shop is really bad for St Mary Street, so anything that goes in there can only be good for the street.”

Mr Hughes-Lewis, who also owns Jonathan David Jewellers on the corner of Morgan Arcade and St Mary Street, said: “I think it will boost the footfall for the street and it all bodes well.

“It’s good for the city centre.”

George Osztreicher, manager of Cranes Music Shop in High Street and a member of the High Street-St Mary Street Traders’ Association, added: “It will bring more people to the street and that’s a positive.

“I’d rather see a supermarket than a bar or club or bank or building society.”

A spokesperson for the supermarket confirmed: “There will be a Sainsbury’s Local store opening in St Mary Street next spring.

“It will be 3,000sq ft and will be located at the former HSBC site on Guildhall Place.

“It’s early days yet and so difficult to say an exact date when the store will open, but it will create 25 new jobs.”
