New First Minister Visits Factory In Bridgend
by Chris Randall - 04/12/2009
"Carwyn Jones AM, newly elected leader of the Labour Party in Wales, chose Remploy’s factory in Bridgend for one of his first engagements since his electoral success on 1 December."
Carwyn Jones AM, newly elected leader of the Labour Party in Wales, chose Remploy’s factory in Bridgend for one of his first engagements since his electoral success on 1 December.
Mr Jones visited the factory on 3 December to help Remploy celebrate International Day of Disabled People, which is promoted worldwide by the United Nations. During a walkabout of the factory he talked with staff about their work and presented ‘Remploy goody bags’ to children from Heronsbridge Special Needs School in Bridgend, who were amongst Remploy’s guests for the day.
The soon-to-be installed First Minister in the Welsh Assembly listened with interest to Remploy’s plans for the Bridgend site and how it will provide a sustainable future for the 69-strong workforce.
Deborah Thomas, Remploy’s Bridgend manager said: “The day has been a huge success. Everyone has voiced their support and willingness to work with us to secure a viable future for the factory.”
Nationally, Remploy celebrated International Day of Disabled People with events at 73 locations across the country.
Tim Matthews, Remploy’s Chief Executive said: “This is a significant day in the Remploy calendar. It’s an opportunity to challenge people’s perceptions of disability.
“It is important that those experiencing the most severe barriers to employment are not marginalised even further because of the economic climate. At Remploy we put ability first and encourage businesses to do the same.”
