Fund for 1,400 new jobs for young
by bbc.co.uk - 19/10/2009
"Almost 1,400 new jobs are being pledged in Swansea as part of a £1bn employment initiative by the UK government."
It follows successful bids by the city council and the Swansea Council for Voluntary Service (SCVS) for money from the Future Jobs Fund.
It aims to create 150,000 new jobs in the UK for 18-24 year-olds and people in unemployment hotspots.
The jobs will be created in a variety of sectors including care and repair, youth work, clerical and horticulture.
Swansea Council's Employment Training said it would create 1,320 jobs and SCVS is set to provide 75 jobs.
Secretary of State for Wales Peter Hain said they would be real jobs that would not happen without the fund.
He said they would pay at least the national minimum wage for at least 25 hours a week and last six months.
"As well as giving young people the satisfaction of earning a wage, these jobs will also give them the opportunity to learn new skills and prove to employers just how capable they are," he said.
Deprivation
"They'll be able to take advantage of almost 1,400 new jobs, in areas such as youth work, retail and construction - not to mention community-focused roles and 'green' jobs.
"We know the longer someone is out of work, the less likely they are to ever return, so it's essential we act now."
Carol Green of SCVS said: "There are certain hotspots in Swansea with deprivation on many levels, including economic inactivity, which affects families as well as individuals.
"We're delighted that the third sector in Swansea has been recognised with this successful bid for the Future Jobs Fund."
Swansea council said the posts would be created through a variety of schemes.
Council leader Chris Holley said: "This is wonderful news. Many young people are finding it hard to access employment opportunities at the moment, so this funding will arrive at an important time and will give them the chance to learn key skills that will prove crucial in future."
