Engineering jobs carried out on new MoD amphibious craft
by thecareerengineer.com - 25/11/2009
"Additional engineering jobs are to be carried out in West Wales on 100 new amphibious vehicles that have just been purchased by the Ministry of Defence"
The Warthog crafts are to be modified by Thales UK at its Welsh integration facilities before being sent out to help British troops in Afghanistan.
As part of the engineering job on each vehicle, additional armour and specialist electronic countermeasures equipment will be added.
The crafts were made by Singapore Technologies Kinetics and are able to carry up to 12 troops across a variety of terrains, from steep slopes to trenches, as well as being able to wade through water.
Brigadier Ian Simpson, head of combat wheels group at Defence Equipment and Support, said: "I am impressed by the high standards of engineering applied to this vehicle and the quality of the support package offered by Singapore Technologies Kinetics."
Earlier this month, BAE Systems put in its bid for a £1 billion contract with the British Army to upgrade its Warrior tanks.
It is hoping to win the engineering job on the basis of its £40 million design of new gun and turret technology for the vehicles.
